Chipping

In Western Placer County "curb-side" chipping service is supported in part by federal/state grants secured through a partnership of the Placer County Resource Conservation District, Placer County, Placer County Sheriff's Department, Placer County Air Pollution Control District and CAL FIRE. These grants are used to help offset and/or reduce the homeowner's full cost of utilizing the chipper service. Cost-share rates are subject to change based on the availability of grant funding and will be set annually. In Truckee Fire Protection District, which includes the Town of Truckee and the Donner Summit area, the a residential chipping service is offered. Call 530-582-7850 for more information.

In the Placer County portion of Lake Tahoe area, including the Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadow areas, the North Tahoe Fire Protection District offers a residential chipping service. Call 530-546-4347 for more information.


Composting


Composting is easy and can be done at home. Contact the U.C. Davis Master Gardeners' Rotline at 530-889-7399 for information on how to compost.


Recycling


Information on the disposal of Solid Waste (garbage) and Recycling can be found under Placer County's Solid Waste and Recycling webpage. You'll find information on how garbage is collected and how material is sorted and recycled. 

Placer County has two Material Recovery Facilities (MRF). One is located in Western Placer County between Roseville and Lincoln and is run by the Western Placer Waste Management Authority (WPWMA). The other is the Eastern Regional Landfill near Truckee. Both of these facilities are helping Placer County meet the State’s 50% waste reduction goal. These recycling facilities are used to sort trash and recover recyclable materials, such as steel, aluminum, plastic, glass, cardboard, newspaper, junk mail, office paper, paperboard, magazines, brush and wood.

Yard waste is composted on site at the WPWMA facility and both facilities chip woodwaste that is used for fuel for the generation of electricity.
