South Pine Café Serves Eclectic Mix of Dishes

Opened in south Auburn in May, South Pine Café is the third branch of a restaurant started in Nevada City a decade ago by George and Suzie Dyer. Their aim, they note on their website, has been to offer an eclectic array of specialty items that will attract a diverse mix of diners. And they seem to be doing just that at their new location. Sacramento Bee critic Mike Dunne says, “The South Pine Café’s extensive menu takes advantage of a modern and global consciousness to bring new color and vigor to traditional breakfast and lunch dishes. Lobster and a hollandaise with jalapeno chile peppers muscle into the eggs Benedict; the chicken in a burrito is seasoned with a Thai peanut sauce … But … there’s also a streak of traditionalism, as represented by such dishes as old timey biscuits and gravy, buttermilk pancakes, and huevos rancheros.”

Kings Beach Housing Project Awarded Large Grant

A project that proposes to triple the amount of affordable housing on four Kings Beach sites recently received a $3.3 million grant from California’s Infill Infrastructure Program. The grant puts a “positive spin” on the Kings Beach Housing Now project, noted Domus Development president Meea Kang. San Francisco-based Domus Development is working with Placer County Redevelopment Agency and other entities to develop 74 units of family rental housing in Kings Beach, one project in the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency’s Community Enhancement Program. “The county really stepped up and supported the project,” Kang said. The grant money is slated to pay for street improvements, utility upgrades, a parking structure, and new facilities to protect water quality and control runoff into Lake Tahoe. Project plans include Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-certified (LEED) green building design. Hyatt Place is the latest in what is becoming a nexus of hotels in the Galleria area. Throughout the county, the number of rooms is expected to double over the next three years, according to Placer Valley Tourism. E-waste Recycling Drive to Help Build Environmental Garden

The city of Roseville and SIMS Recycling Solutions have kicked off a business-oriented e-waste collection drive that will help fund construction of a public environmental learning garden. SIMS will donate a portion of the proceeds from the collection of televisions, printers, monitors, towers, laptops, and other electronics to the Roseville Utility Exploration Center’s planned Ideascape, an interactive garden demonstrating ideas for conserving water and energy, recycling and reducing waste. The city will match SIMS's contribution to the garden, according to a news release. The service, which is free to businesses, will be offered through September 17. Throughout the drive, businesses can call to have recycling boxes dropped off and SIMS will pick up the boxes at the completion of the drive. Vintners Open Showcase for Award-winning Wines

Longtime wine enthusiasts Stewart and Stephanie Perry turned their hobby into a business four years ago when they opened Fawnridge Winery in Auburn. They released their first wines - a Syrah, Merlot, and a Chardonnay - in 2004. Now, the couple has taken the next step, opening a wine tasting room in Downtown Auburn. Visitors to the tasting room have their choice of several award-winning Fawnridge vintages - a 2005 Barbera, a 2005 Chardonnay, a Sangiovese, a port, and an Old Vine Zinfandel. For the Perry’s, the wine business is “…about the people. That’s what drew us to the industry,” Stewart said. “My wife and I both enjoy the people who come in and ask questions about the industry and enjoy the wine.” For details visit Fawnridge Winery at http://www.fawnridgewine.com/ or the Auburn Journal at http://www.auburnjournal.com/detail/88616.html?content_source=&category_id=&search_filter=Fawnridge+Winery&search_filter_mode=&list_type=&order_by=&order_sort=&content_class=1&sub_type=&town_id=6
