Lake Tahoe Music Festival Sparkles with Musical Variety

Fourplay, Huey Lewis and the News, Broadway Night, Boz Scaggs, The Yellowjackets, and Reno Philharmonic Orchestra - that’s the many-starred lineup for this summer’s Lake Tahoe Music Festival, staged at scenic venues around the North Shore. The festival opens July 23 with the jazz group Fourplay performing at West End Beach Donner Lake, and closes with a classical symphony concert August 8 at Homewood Resort. This year marks the festival’s 27th consecutive season. Founded in 1982 by Edgar Braun, conductor of the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, it has grown in scope yearly with the help and involvement of many local residents and businesses. A nonprofit organization, the festival aims to present diverse, quality musical experiences and create educational and performance opportunities for aspiring young musicians. Sutter Roseville Seeks Designation as ‘Heart Attack Center’

Sutter Roseville Medical Center - whose doctors each perform 150 angioplasty and stenting procedures a year - wants to be designated as a “heart attack center” as part of a state experimental program. The state health department later this year will pick six hospitals for the pilot program to offer both kinds of procedures without on-site cardiac surgery services. “With heart attacks, the first 90 minutes are crucial,” said Dr. George Fehrenbacher, Sutter’s chief of staff. “You want to give (people) the best chance possible.” If Sutter Roseville is picked for the program, patients who are experiencing heart attack symptoms would be taken directly there instead of to nearby emergency rooms. Once there, they could undergo angioplasty and stenting procedures. Sutter and other hospitals fought for the statewide trial of the program for more than three years, saying that having a designated cardiac treatment cardiac treatment center that can operate 24 hours a day and 365 days a year is key to improving patient care. New, Spiffy Salon Opens in Downtown Auburn

When longtime hairstylist Mary Consola Rogers decided to open her own salon, called Salon Nuriche, she wanted it to reflect professionalism and comfort. She and her husband, Bob Rogers, spent a couple of years thinking and planning before they found just the right location, a former art studio in a historic house on High Street in Downtown Auburn. They converted the space, painting and decorating in “comforting colors” - beiges, blues, and browns. The final touch was choosing the background music, dating from the 1940s to the present, that Mary describes as “very calming but upbeat.” Two other stylists and two manicurists work with Mary at Salon Nuriche. Mary has been doing hair for more than 30 years, and her focus is creating personalized hairstyles that go best with each client’s face shape. Wine Buffs Turn Pro with Dream Acreage

When Mike and Diane Naggiar purchased acreage for a vineyard near the Placer-Nevada county line, their dream was to grow and sell wine grapes. Ten years later, they are not only selling the grapes but also creating award-winning wines. And in June they opened a 3,600-square-foot, $1.5 million tasting room. Diane handles marketing and sales while Mike concentrates on growing the grapes and making the wine. Under the guidance of experts, he chose varieties that do well in southern Europe - sangiovese, barbera, zinfandel, and the Rhones. Eighty percent of their yield is sold to other wineries, and the remaining 20 percent goes into the Naggiar vintages - 14 wines, with total case production of 2,000, mostly sold direct to consumers. The wines range in price from $19 for the Voignier to $46 for the 2006 Le Grand Pere. For details, visit Naggiar Vineyards at

Outlook Good for Placer Arts

South Placer County’s art scene continues to thrive despite a downturn in the economy, said Angela Tahti, executive director of PlacerArts, the nonprofit, public benefit agency that is the designated partner of the California Arts Council. For instance, Blue Line Gallery opened in downtown Roseville in February 2008 as the new home of Roseville Arts!, a nonprofit founded almost 50 years ago. And response to First Friday, which debuted in March was “fantastic,” Tahti said. First Friday is a free interactive, multimedia event held every first Friday, 6 to 9 p.m., at the Arts Building in Downtown Auburn. Auburn will soon have another live-performance venue - the old State Theatre, being renovated as a performing arts center by the local nonprofit group Auburn Placer Performing Arts Center (APPAC). “We’re subject to the reality of challenging times just as any business,” Tahti said, “so we’re just trying to figure it out.” For more, visit the Sacramento Business Journal at http://sacramento.bizjournals.com/sacramento/stories/2009/03/23/focus2.html

Signs By Design Offers New “Big-Pics” Graphic Wall Images

Using a new program called PhotoTex, Signs By Design, in the Sunset Industrial Area, can now produce graphic wall images called “Big-Pics.” Big-Pics can be sports pictures, business promotional images, restaurant ads and menu boards, wedding photos, or custom wallpapers. “Our philosophy is to work with you to increase your visibility and promote the products and services you offer with innovative ideas,” said owner Don Prather. Prather established Signs By Design in 2008 after working as a financial advisor for 18 years. Prather works with two employees, including senior graphic artist Keith Burwell, who has 20 years of experience in graphic design. A third employee will soon be added to the growing business. Summer Brings Comedians, Bands to River Ranch Lodge

In summer, visitors to River Ranch Lodge arrive by car, raft, bike, or on foot. That’s because the popular historic lodge is situated alongside the Truckee River at the end of the raft run from Tahoe City and is a destination point on the river’s bicycle and walking path. People gather on the large patio and bar overlooking the river, a lively hub of entertainment and summer activities, including a daily barbeque lunch. This summer, besides fine dining and cozy accommodations, River Ranch is presenting a comedy night starting on July 15 with band concerts - jazz, rock, blues, reggae - and continuing on several Thursday nights throughout the season. Originally called the Deer Park Inn, the resort was completed in 1888 and grew into a fashionable watering hole on the old narrow gauge railway that ran along Truckee. In 1950, the old structure was cleared, and the wood-shingled River Ranch Lodge was erected on the site. For details, visit http://www.riverranchlodge.com/home

Sinclair Family Farm Raises Grass-fed Lamb

Naturally raised, grass-fed lamb is the focus of the Sinclair Family Farm, located in Penryn. Karin and Keith Sinclair, along with their children, got involved in producing sheep in 1998, thanks to their daughter’s 4H project. “We started with one ewe, and the flock has continued to grow,” said Karin. “Our whole family is very involved with the farm. There are so many things that we love about working with the land and the animals. Our aim is to keep things as natural as possible for both.” The Sinclairs run a rotational grazing system on various properties in Placer County to produce meat higher in essential nutrients such as Omega 3 fatty acids. Rotation also helps maintain grass and brush to improve the health and well-being of the land. Currently, the Sinclairs are selling direct from the farm and at local produce stores such as the Blue Goose in Loomis. For details, visit Sinclair Family Farms at http://www.sinclairfamilyfarm.net/

Speed Factory Produces Indoor Dirtbike Thrills

Just opened in Lincoln is an indoor, 35,000-square-foot motocross track, housed in an industrial building near Lincoln Airport. Owner Brent Davis designed the track with an average rider in mind - someone who wouldn’t want to take a 70-foot jump on his or her first track outing. Davis said the track layout will be changed every few months and designed around the average skill level of his customers. The facility includes extra safety precautions, such as foam wrapping around the building’s support beams. The next closest indoor track, Davis said, is in Michigan. The go-cart portion of the Speed Factory should be open in mid-July and will feature 30 European-made Sodi go-karts with 270 cc Honda engines.
