BrightStar Home Health Agency Serves South Placer County

Now licensed by the California Department of Public Health, BrightStar Home Health agency provides skilled nursing and physical therapy services in the home. The Roseville agency is an independently owned and operated franchise of BrightStar, which has 130 agencies across the country. “Referral sources such as hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and case management organizations contact us when patients are discharged to their homes and need skilled nursing or therapy,” explained Ignacio Cespedes, owner and president of the Roseville BrightStar. The growing company currently has more than 40 employees available on-call, and plans to more than double that number in 2010. A separate division of the company, BrightStar HomeCare, provides respite and companion care in the home - meal preparation, errands, bathing assistance, pet care, light housekeeping, and transportation to appointments. “Our operating philosophy is ‘yes, please tell us what you need,’” said Cespedes. “We’re available 24/7 without answering service. We’ll treat you like our own family. We hire the best to provide the best quality of service.” For details, contact Ignacio Cespedes at icespedes@brightstarhealthcare.com or (916) 781-6500 visit BrightStar Healthcare at http://www.brightstarhealthcare.com/

The Place! Opens in Lincoln with a Dozen Artists

Newly opened in Lincoln is a fine arts gallery and antique store highlighting up to 25 area artists. The Place! Is the result of a one-year collaboration of artists Jean Cross and Bonnie Dunlap, and businesswoman Kathy Dorsey, who also owns The Wardrobe on 5th Street. Besides artwork, the gallery offers old photographs restored by Cross (of which the Lincoln Area Archives Museum will receive a percentage of sales) and antiques, from silk kimonos to church chairs. Five Star Auto Care Recognized by National Magazine

Rocklin’s Five Star Auto Care, a one-stop shop for car washes and auto repair, was recently named one of the Top 50 car washes in the country by Modern Car Care magazine, one of only three California car washes so recognized. “The 50 car washes on the list were chosen because of their established presence in their communities,” said Modern Car Care editor Tony Jones. An environmentally friendly car wash, Five Star installed 612 solar panels a year ago and now operates almost entirely on solar energy. It also incorporates other “green” items and practices into its operations, including eco-friendly cleaning solutions, energy-saving blow dryers, and recycling used oil and oil filters. Focused on the community, Five Star is a member of regional chambers of commerce and a frequent sponsor of several local events. The business also supports local schools through donations as well as incentive programs. For more, visit Five Star Auto at

Placer Wineries Win State Fair Medals

Casque Wines, one of the county’s newest wineries, and Pescatore Winery, founded in 1997, walked away from the 2009 California State Fair Wine Competition with several medals. Casque’s two inaugural red wines won two of 37 medals given in the new Microwinery category - a Silver for its 2006 Syrah and a Bronze for the 2006 Cabernet Franc. Casque produces small lots of hand-crafted Bordeaux and Rhone-style wines. Earlier this year, Casque’s 2007 Calotte Blanc, a white Rhone-style blend, won “Best of Class” at the San Francisco Chronicle 2009 Wine Competition. Pescatore Vineyard and Winery garnered a Bronze Medal at the State Fair for its 2007 Petite Sirah, the same wine that won a Gold Medal at this year’s Chronicle Wine Competition. Using only grapes grown in Placer County, Pescatore produces annually 600 to 700 cases of wine, including Zinfandel, Syrah, and Barbara. Both wineries will be represented at the 2nd Annual Placer Valley Wine & Art Party, featuring 14 Placer County wineries and their award-winning wines, at Fountains at Roseville, Saturday, October 17, 6 to 11 p.m. The party includes the works of 50 artists on display and a full concert with three live bands. William Jessup Opens New Apartment Complex

William Jessup University in Rocklin recently opened its new student apartment complex, marking the completion of the first phase of the college’s $25 million expansion project announced a year ago. The complex, which is Rocklin’s first five-story building, creates space for up to 192 additional students, doubling William Jessup’s current on-campus capacity. The 192-bed apartment building contains 24 apartments, each with four furnished bedrooms and two baths. The eight-person suites are about 1,420 square feet. The 35,517-square-foot complex was constructed by Reeve-Knight Construction Inc., the chief contractor for the project. William Jessup’s fall semester started in August with the university’s largest incoming freshman class - 130 students. Tiffany Opens Jewelry Store at Galleria

Adding another iconic name to Roseville’s distinguished list of retailers, Tiffany & Co. opened its doors in August to dozens of excited shoppers. The opening - giving the region its first chance to bring home a “Tiffany Blue” bag without going to the Bay Area - comes at a time when purveyors of luxury goods, including Tiffany, have seen their sales squashed by the recession.  As a result, Tiffany decided to reduce the number of store openings this year to three, down from six in 2008. The opening, then, was a vote of confidence in the Westfield Galleria at Roseville and Placer County, which has continued to attract high-end tenants despite the downturn. The new store carries very expensive pieces, including a $100,000 aquamarine brooch, but also offers more moderately priced items. Pop-up Goes the Fine Art

Auburn Artist David A. Carter is one of the world’s best-known paper engineers, as creators of pop-up books are known. His bug series - “The 12 Bugs of Christmas,” “Bugs in Space,” etc. - numbers about 20 books, and he has produced dozens of others. His latest series - the final title coming out this fall - takes pop-ups into a new realm, experts say: the realm of fine art. “I have no question that this is a form of art,” said Beth Rohlfes, curator for the Blue Line Gallery in Roseville. The gallery recently opened a show, running through January 9, that focuses entirely on Carter’s “Red Dot” book series, inspired by the work of Alexander Calder, the sculptor famous for monumental mobiles spotted with red, blue, yellow, and black. “These are purely abstract and purely sculpture, and they’re beautiful,” said Maria Winkler, an art professor at CSUS.
