Changes in Local and State Districts

Following the census every ten years, the boundaries of political districts are adjusted for elected officials at all levels, local, state and federal, to reflect changes in population. This process is called "redistricting," and is done to assure that political districts at each level of government contains roughly the same number of residents.

This may mean the federal, state or local district in which a resident lives will change. For example, Placer County used to be contained entirely in State Assembly District 4, represented by Assembly Member Tim Leslie. In 2001, however, the California State Legislature approved new district boundaries which place a portion of Placer County, in the north, in Assembly District 3, represented by Assembly Member Sam Aanestad.
