Preparedness Information: Should You Buy a Generator?

Preparedness Information: Should you buy a generator?

Basic Emergency Preparations

More Information

If your situation demands an uninterrupted supply of power, you might want to consider purchasing a generator.

However, generators can introduce as many problems as they solve:

  • The noise of generators can disrupt an entire neighborhood. Use only when necessary.
  • Generators smell and create noxious fumes.
  • They require fuel, which is difficult and dangerous to store. Storing large quantities of fuel could violate local safety ordinances.
  • You'll need to run extension cords to the devices you want to power.
  • Generator capacity must be taken into account and matched to demand. Surge (start-up) power for devices with motors - refrigerators, furnace blowers, washing machines and vacuum cleaners - must be accounted for.
  • Be knowledgeable on all operation and maintenance procedures.
  • Make sure that your generator installation meets local codes and ordinances.
  • Consider installing a carbon monoxide detector.
  • Generators are often expensive.
