Meetings Scheduled on Placer County Tahoe Government Center

February 09, 2009

The Placer County Facilities Services Department will hold a public meeting on Feb. 17, 2009, to solicit comment on additional sites being considered for a county Tahoe Government Center. Over the past several years, the county has investigated a number of sites in and near the Lake Tahoe Basin for consolidation of general government offices currently located in the Tahoe area.

Last March, the County Board of Supervisors identified a proposed development in Kings Beach as the favored site for a government center. However, recognizing the uncertainty of development in the Tahoe Basin and the costs associated with the Kings Beach project, the Board also instructed Facilities Services staff to continue its search for other compatible sites.

The meeting on Tues., Feb. 17, will be at the North Tahoe Event Center, 8318 North Lake Blvd., Kings Beach, at 6 p.m.

Additionally, at the request of District 5 Supervisor Jennifer Montgomery, the North Tahoe Regional Advisory Council will also hear a similar Facility Services’ presentation on these new sites during its regularly scheduled meeting on Thurs., Feb 19, 2009 at 6 p.m., at the Tahoe City Public Utility District Board Room, 221 Fairway Dr. in Tahoe City.

Staff has identified three additional sites they are investigating for use as a government center. They are:

  • Tahoe Tree Company, 10-plus acres, at the corner of Highway 89 and Granlibakken Drive, in Tahoe City;
  • The Highlands Village, 11-plus acres, at Fabian Way and Highway 28 in Dollar Hill; and
  • North Tahoe Public Utility District properties at 875 National Blvd. in Tahoe Vista.

“We owe it to our taxpayers to investigate these new sites that could provide more cost effective development options,” said Jim Durfee, Facility Services director. “In this current economic climate, we are being presented with some intriguing properties that were not available when we started this process. Input received from this community meeting will assist us as we prepare our recommendations to the Board of Supervisors in coming months.”

The county is looking for a site that could accommodate a 24,000 square foot facility to house its Community Development Resources Agency, which includes Planning, Building, Engineering and Surveying, and Environmental Health, the Assessors’ Office, the Department of Public Works Engineering function, the Tahoe Executive Office, Public Information Office, Redevelopment Agency, and other agencies whose co-location would enhance the delivery of public services.

In addition to the public meetings, comments can be submitted prior to the Feb. 17 meeting by mailing them to the Department of Facility Services, 11476 C Ave., CA 95603, by email facpropmgmt@placer.ca.gov, or by facsimile to (530) 889-6857. Messages can be left at (530) 886-4963. For further background information and updates on this process, go to www.placer.ca.gov/TGCSiteSolicitation.
