Construction Begins on Tahoe City Transit Center

July 06, 2010

The Placer County Department of Public Works Tahoe Engineering Division is reminding North Lake Tahoe residents and visitors that construction has begun on the Tahoe City Transit Center. For safety reasons, during construction, the bike and pedestrian trail that runs along the construction area has been rerouted around the back of the parcel. The detour will be in place for the duration of the construction, which is expected to be completed in spring of 2011. The detour adds approximately 0.25 miles to the trail. The Tahoe Engineering Division will have a staff onsite during construction to ensure compliance with permits.

The Board of Supervisors last month awarded the contract for the Transit Center to the Reno, Nevada, office of Gilbane Construction Company.

When completed, the $4.2 million Transit Center will cover about 2.5 acres on a tract of land west of State Route 89. The Center will serve as a hub for Placer County’s Tahoe Area Regional Transit (TART) buses. The Center will be situated adjacent to hiking and bike paths and provide parking for commuters and visitors to utilize buses to get around on the North and West Shores of Lake Tahoe.

The Transit Center is part of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency’s Environmental Improvement Project program for improving air quality, which in turn will benefit lake clarity. The project is also consistent with numerous agency transportation plans, community plans, and studies.
