The Truckee River flows from Lake Tahoe in this undated photo. | Lake Tahoe spans two states, five counties and one city. Because 80 percent of the land within the Tahoe Basin is owned by the federal government, the United States Forest Service plays a large role in land use planning and environmental stewardship. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, a bi-state agency created by the states of California and Nevada and the U.S. Congress regulates growth through the enforcement of codes and ordinances that require improvements in nine environmental threshold areas, including protection of Lake Tahoe’s famed water quality. Special districts provide many localized services, such as sewer, water, recreation and education. |
