Current Building Codes

New codes go into effect January 1, 2008

Placer County updated its building codes, based on the state-mandated building codes, effective November 1, 2002. The current state codes are:
  • The 2001 California Building Code (Based on the 1997 Uniform Building Code)
  • The 2001 California Mechanical Code (Based on the 2000 Uniform Mechanical Code)
  • The 2001 California Plumbing Code (Based on the 2000 Uniform Plumbing Code)
  • The 2004 California Electric Code (Based on the 1999 National Electric Code)
  • The 2001 California Fire Code (Based on the 2000 Uniform Fire Code)

Further information about these codes and where to obtain copies is available at the California State Building Standards Commission Web page.

There have also been modifications to local Placer County codes. The code has been amended for revisions, consolidations, and reinstatement/clarification of the various construction requirements including revision of administrative requirements and procedures. Examples of changes include:

  • Changing the requirement for sprinklers in commercial buildings of 3,700 square feet or more (the limit used to be 4,500 square feet or more), and providing for requiring sprinklers when additions are built
  • Requiring automatic smoke/heat detection systems in commercial buildings
  • Clarifying the requirements for interconnection of smoke detectors in residential building additions
  • Clarifying freeze protection requirements for water supply systems for buildings located above 5,000 ft. in elevation
  • Clarifying the areas in the county where Class A and Class B roofing assemblies are required

For further information on code changes, please contact the Building Department.
