Flood Insurance

The Federal Insurance and Mitigation Administration (FIMA), a component of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) , manages the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The three components of NFIP are:

  • Flood Insurance
  • Floodplain Management
  • Flood Hazard Mapping

NFIP and CRS
Placer County participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) by adopting and enforcing floodplain management ordinances to reduce future flood damage. Placer County Ordinance
Article 15.52 - Flood Damage Prevention Regulations addresses floodplain management. The NFIP makes federally-backed flood insurance available to homeowners, renters, and business owners in our community.

The Community Rating System (CRS) is designed to recognize floodplain management activities that are above and beyond the NFIP’s minimum requirements. By implementing floodplain management activities, the residents of Placer County can qualify for a flood insurance premium rate reduction.

Flood Insurance
If you don't have flood insurance, contact your property/casualty agent or broker about eligibility for flood insurance, which is offered through the National Flood Insurance Program. Homeowner's insurance policies do not cover damage from floods. However, because Placer County participates in the National Flood Insurance Program, you can purchase a separate flood insurance policy. This insurance is backed by the Federal government and is available to everyone, even for properties that have been flooded previously.
