Garbage Collection
Placer County contracts with two companies to provide garbage collection in the unincorporated areas of the County, Auburn Placer Disposal Service (APDS) and Tahoe Truckee Sierra Disposal (TTSD). In the western portion of the County, from the Roseville area to Colfax, APDS provides garbage service and manages three garbage transfer stations. In the east, from Colfax to the Tahoe area, TTSD provides garbage service and manages the Eastern Regional Materials Recovery Facility, near Truckee.

Recycling & Recovery
Most of the garbage that is collected – both residential and commercial –goes to a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) ( eastern MRF western MRF) where recyclable materials are recovered from the garbage,
including:

  • Wood/greenwaste
  • Metal - ferrous/metallic items
  • Plastic - many grades
  • Glass - all colors
  • Paper - newspaper, junk mail, phonebooks, magazines, scrap paper, paperboard and cardboard

The recovered materials are processed and sold throughout the world, helping to conserve natural resources. Although recyclable materials are recovered from garbage at the MRF, buy-back and drop-off locations are also available at each MRF and throughout the county ( east & west). The garbage collection companies also offer some school and commercial recycling services, please contact them for specific information.

Garbage Disposal
After the garbage has been sorted at the MRF, materials that cannot be recycled are taken to a landfill. In the western portion of the County, garbage is disposed of at the only active landfill in Placer County the Western Regional Sanitary Landfill in Roseville. In the eastern portion of the County, garbage is taken to Lockwood landfill in the state of Nevada.
