The familiar California story of pulling treasure from the ground was also true in Penryn. Though instead of gold, men dug for granite.

The Griffith Quarry Museum is housed in what was originally the Penryn Granite Works office which was established by Welsh immigrant Griffith Griffith in 1864. Far from its days as a working quarry, the 23-acre park is now home to the museum, nature trails, ruins of the first polishing mill built in California and some of the pits from which the unique Penryn granite was quarried.
The museum contains some of the original office furniture of the Penryn Granite Works and information on the Griffith family, the history of the Penryn-Loomis Basin area, and the granite industry. An exhibit featuring buildings made with Penryn granite illustrates why the granite industry was a major economic factor in the 19th century.
This site is located approximately 10 miles west of Auburn on Interstate 80 and is listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and the California Landmark Program.
