We are deeply saddened by the loss of our friend, Richard “Dick” Cushman (1929 - 2011), a supporter of literacy for 25 years and founding member of the Literacy Support Council of Placer County. Dick’s influence has a significant and lasting impact on literacy throughout the Placer County community. We are eternally grateful for his dedication and commitment to the PALS program.

Volunteer reading coaches work with English-speaking adults who want to improve their reading.  PALS was established in 1985 as a FREE program of the Placer County Library.

• Learners are assessed, then matched one-on-one with a reading coach.

• Reading coach and learner meet at a time and place convenient to both. 

Services are:

• Free
• Confidential
• One-on-One
• Learner Centered
• Learner Goal Oriented

A learner in the program should be:

• 16 years or older
• Out of school
• Able to speak English well enough to request services, perform an assessment, and communicate with a reading coach
• Able to meet with reading coach on regular basis

A reading coach in the program should be:

• 18 years or older
• Relatively proficient in both spoken and written English
• Able to participate in an informational meeting and a 10-hour reading coach training
• Able to meet with learner on regular basis
• Able to commit to volunteering for a minimum of 6 months

Reading Coach Trainings:

Trainings are held approximately three times per year at different branch libraries.  Please call the office for more information or look below to see if the next one has been scheduled and posted.

Literacy Support Council of Placer County is a non-profit organization formed in 1991 whose sole purpose is the support of the Placer Adult Literacy Service.

 
Meetings are held 1 p.m. on the 4^th Tuesday of the month in the meeting room of the library listed below.  Boosters are always needed....  come join us!  The public is welcome.

Upcoming Reading Coach Training

Make a difference in someone's life... be an adult literacy volunteer!  Won't you consider sharing the gift of reading?  Help the people in your community who wish to improve their reading and writing skills!  If you wish to be a reading coach, please make it a priority to attend the informational meeting the week before the training.

Summer training dates
Wednesday, July 11, 6:00pm, Informational Meeting
Friday, July 20, 6:00 - 9:00pm, Coach Training
Saturday, July 21, 9:00 - 5:00pm, Coach Training
Summer Training to be held at the Granite Bay Library.

Fall training dates
Tuesday, October 9, 6:00pm, Informational Meeting
Friday, October 19, 6:00 - 9:00pm, Coach Training
Saturday, October 20, 9:00 - 5:00pm, Coach Training
Fall Training to be held at the Auburn Library.

To complete the training you must attend both days.  There is no cost to attend.  Participants must pre-register so that adequate materials can be supplied. 

Light refreshments will be available on for the training Friday evening and Saturday morning.  Participants must bring their own lunch to the training on Saturday as time will not allow us to go off site.
