Civil Service Commission
The Civil Service Commission regulates the employment and working conditions of Placer County employees. They oversee hiring and promotions, and promote the values of the public service. Their role is similar to the Human Resources department found in corporations. The Commission was established in 1961 by the voters of Placer County, under the authority of the 1939 County Civil Service Enabling Act as set forth in the Government Code of the State of California.
The Commission is responsible for all classified positions, adopting and enforcing rules, recruitment and testing, payroll and records management, classification maintenance, and conducting hearings upon appeals from employees.
Civil Service Commissioners
The Board of Supervisors appoints five citizens to serve as members of the Commission. Vacancies are filled by a majority vote of the Board of Supervisors for a four-year term that begins on the date of appointment. Members cannot be a Supervisor, officer or employee of the County. Members receive $100 for each meeting they attend and are reimbursed for actual and necessary expenses incidental to the proper execution of their duties and responsibilities, including mileage.
Members may be removed from the Commission with a majority vote of the Board of Supervisors. The Board must state the reason for removal in writing and allow an opportunity for a public hearing.

Two members are selected by the Commissioners to serve as Chairperson and Vice Chairperson each calendar year. For 2013, these are:

Civil Service Meeting Schedule
The Commission meets the second Monday of each month at 4:30 p.m. in the Personnel Training Room, located at 145 Fulweiler Ave., Auburn, CA 95603. Special meetings may also be scheduled as required.
