*In addition to monthly salary, permanent employees assigned to the Tahoe area receive a monthly subsistence pay of $675.

Description

To operate and perform routine maintenance on a public transit vehicle in passenger service; to operate a public transit vehicle safely and legally; and to practice principles of good customer service.

Minimum Qualifications

It is the applicant’s responsibility to identify in their application materials how they meet the MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS listed below.

 

BUS DRIVER I:

Experience:No related experience is required.

Training:Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

License or Certificate: Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license.  Proof of adequate vehicle insurance and medical clearance may also be required.Possession of valid CPR and First Aid certificates will be required and presented at the time of the departmental interview.

BUS DRIVER II:

Experience:
One year of responsible paid driving experience involving the carrying of passengers or six months of training as a Bus Driver I in a Placer Countytransit system.

Training: Successful completion of the experience requirement is proof of sufficient training for this class.

License or Certificate: Possession of a valid Class B driver's license with air brake and passenger endorsements.  Possession of valid CPR and First Aid certificates will be required and presented at the time of the departmental interview.

Special Requirements

* Safety Sensitive– Positions defined as “Safety Sensitive” per the U.S. Department of Transportation regulations require that persons hired into them are subject to random drug and alcohol testing in addition to pre-employment drug (only) testing, and reasonable suspicion and post accident drug/alcohol testing.  Applicants are required to COMPLETE, SIGN, and RETURN to the Personnel Department with their application materials the Consent to Release Previous Employer Alcohol & Drug Test Information form.  This form will allow for a background investigation of every other employer for which “safety sensitive” functions were performed OR for which you applied and did not obtain “safety sensitive” employment during the last two years.  Copy the form as necessary to report all employers in the last two years.

Failure to complete and return the application for employment, supplemental questionnaire, and Consent to Release Alcohol and Drug Test Information form(s) will result in your application materials being rejected.

Examination Process

TRAINING & EXPERIENCE RATING – 100%

Based upon responses to the attached supplemental questionnaire, the applicant’s education, training and experience will be evaluated using a pre-determined formula.  Scores from this evaluation will determine applicant ranking and placement on the eligible list.

Notification

Notification for each phase of the recruitment process will be by U.S. Mail.  Please notify the Personnel Department of any address change for all applications submitted.

Knowledge of

BUS DRIVER I:  Principles of good customer service. Vehicle maintenance practices and techniques used in making minor repairs.

BUS DRIVER II:  In addition to the qualifications for Bus Driver I:  California Vehicle Code applicable to the operation of vehicles for the transportation of passengers; applicable Placer County policies and regulations; emergency procedures; elements of first aid and CPR.

Ability to

BUS DRIVER I:  Relate well to passengers and maintain order among passengers, when necessary; act quickly and calmly in emergency situations; on a continuous basis, know and understand bus driving activities and observe safety rules.  Intermittently analyze driving conditions; identify safety hazards; and remember how to operate a bus; intermittently sit while driving a bus; stand and walk while performing routine maintenance on a bus; regularly lift very heavy weight; work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a tactful and effective manner; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; understand and follow written and oral instructions. 

BUS DRIVER II:  Drive a transit vehicle safely and efficiently; analyze situations quickly and objectively and determine proper course of action; provide CPR and first aid.

Condition of Employment

Before date of hire, applicant must pass a medical examination which includes drug screening and possibly a psychological evaluation, sign a constitutional oath, and submit proof of U.S. Citizenship or legal right to remain and work in the U.S.  Applicants may also be required to submit proof of age, undergo a background check, be bonded, and/or be fingerprinted.

Modified Agency Shop

All new permanent employees, with the exception of law enforcement and management, shall be required to join the employee organization or pay an 'Agency Fee' as a condition of employment.

The eligible list(s) resulting from this recruitment may be certified as a substitute list for a substantially similar classification.  For this purpose, a substantially similar classification is one at a lower level in the same classification (example: entry level vs. journey) and/or a similar classification (similar work performed, similar training and experience qualifications required). If you are contacted for an interview by a County department, you will be informed of the classification and other relevant information. If you choose not to interview for a substantially similar classification, you will remain on the eligible list for which you originally applied.
