What is the process for a NEW CCW Permit with Placer County?
Step 1 - Review the Criteria for Consideration of Issuance and our process for issuance of a Concealed Weapons Permit within Placer County.
Step 2 - Download and complete the CCW Application provided by California Department of Justice, Bureau of Firearms Download CCW Application. Read all directions carefully.
Step 3 - After you have completed the application, schedule a "New Concealed Weapons Permit” appointment via our online appointment system. [Online Appointment System] Please note when accessing our Online Appointment System, you will be asked for identifying information pertaining to you as the applicant. Required fields must be completed to schedule an appointment.
Step 4 - During your "New Concealed Weapons Permit" appointment, you will be meeting with a member of the Sheriff's Support Staff for a face to face interview. During this time, your application and statements within will be reviewed. For this appointment, you will need to bring your completed CCW Application, government issued identification and/or California ID, gun training certification [See Training Requirements], weapon qualification verification, a copy of your California ID, proof of residency (i.e. copy of a utility bill or property taxes) and a fee of $20.00 (cash, check or money order for made payable to "Placer County Sheriff’s Office") . After intterview your application will be reviewed by the Support Services Command level staff for approval or denial. You will generally receive notification of your Concealed Weapons Permit’s disposition within 30 days after your initial interview.
- If your application for a CCW Permit is denied, you can review the Appeals Process if you want to appeal the board's decision.
- If your application for a CCW Permit is approved, you will be contacted by the Support Services staff to arrange for a Live Scan appointment.
Step 5 - You will need to download and complete the Office of Justice (DOJ) Live Scan form. Download DOJ Live Scan Form and DOJ Live Scan Instructions At the time of your appointment, you will be required to pay the remaining CCW permit fee of $193.00.
- Method of Payment accepted: Cash (no bills over $20 dollars preferred), check or money order made payable to “Placer County Sheriff’s Office” for the DOJ processing fees and our permit fee.
Step 6 – Once our office has received DOJ clearance, you will receive your permit or denial in the mail. Generally, this step can take up to 60 days. Return to top

What training requirements are required for a CCW Permit?
New CCW Permits – Prior to your New Permit appointment, complete at least an 8-hour training course, conducted by a Placer County Sheriff’s approved Instructor [CCW Instructors], which includes instruction on firearm safety and the law regarding the permissible use of a firearm, is required. In addition, you must provide validation that you demonstrated proficiency and/or qualified on each weapon you want listed on your CCW permit.
CCW Permit Renewals (every 2 years) - Prior to renewal, complete at least a 4-hour legal firearms update refresher course. In addition, proof that you demonstrated proficiency and/or qualified on each weapon listed on your CCW permit.
Weapon Qualification - You must qualify with the weapon(s)/type(s) listed on your permit. If you want to add or remove weapons from your permit, a qualification is required all the weapons you want on the permit and you will need to schedule a "Concealed Weapons Permit Modification" appointment via our online appointment system. Training Certifications – Upon completion of the required training course, all certificates are valid within the first year of completion.

What is the process to modify any information on your CCW Permit?
A current permit holder would need to make modifications to an existing permit for the following reasons:
- Recently moved and still live within Placer County. You have 10 days after you move to modify your CCW permit with your new address.
- Recently moved and live outside Placer County
- Add, drop, or change weapon
- on existing permit. Please note, when adding a gun to an existing permit you must have proof of proficiency and/or qualification must be submitted for the new weapon.
To modify your permit you will need to complete the DOJ Modification form Modification Form and schedule a "Modify Permit” appointment via our online appointment system.Online Appointment System There will be a $5 charge for each CCW Permit modifications, payment made payable to “Placer County Sheriff’s Office”. What is the process to renew an existing CCW Permit with Placer County?
To renew your CCW Permit every two years: Step 1 - Download and complete the Renewal CCW Application. Download CCW Renewal ApplicationSchedule a "Renew Permit" appointment via our online appointment system. Online Appointment System
Step 2 – During your "Renew Permit" appointment, you will need to turn in all of your training requirements. Fees to renew an existing permit will be $77 cash, check or money order payable to "Placer County Sheriff’s Office" to cover DOJ fees and our processing fees. Return to top

What happens when my request for a permit is denied?
All applicants will receive notice in writing regarding the denial of their application. Applicants who are denied a concealed weapons permit will be advised of the reason for the denial. Applicants may appeal if their application for a permit is denied. All appeals must be submitted in writing to: |

Written appeals should be specific, clearly outlining the applicant’s rebuttal to the reason stated for denial. Additional information, which may be pertinent to the applicants request for a permit should also be included. Note: Appeals must be received by the Sheriff’s Office no later than (30) thirty days from the date of the notification letter. |

No resident has the right to a license, nor is the Sheriff required to issue a license. By law, the Sheriff has the discretion to approve or deny CCW license applications as well as revoke licenses that have already been issued. |
