Community Services

Youth and Community Services Unit

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office is concerned with citizens’ personal safety and the protection of their property. In this regard, a number of crime prevention programs have been developed to reduce the potential for crimes against county residents.

A sergeant, ten deputies, and four community services officers staff the Sheriff’s Office Community Services Unit. This unit is comprised of the community services officers, school resource deputies, and a problem-oriented policing deputy.

Community Services Officers

Community service officers are available to make public presentations for organizations, community groups, churches and schools throughout Placer County on a variety of topics. Programs/topics include but are not limited to: Neighborhood Watch, residential/ business security checks, commercial crime prevention, personal safety presentations, neighborhood news letters, environmental impact reports, senior safety program, National Safe Kids, Red Ribbon Week, 911 educational programs, career days, bicycle rodeos, National Night Out, Sheriff’s equestrian camp, office tours, fingerprinting community groups, and Alzheimer’s Aid Society.

School Resource Deputies

School resource deputies are responsible for teaching on high school, junior high, and elementary school campuses, developing and maintaining a good rapport with teachers, students, parents and administrators, as well as maintaining a law enforcement presence on campus and at school events . SRO’s and school administrators work closely together in providing a safe environment for students. SRO’s assist the school in developing and improving crisis plans, evacuations and other situations that are a safety concern. Deputies are located on every high school campus in the unincorporated areas of the county.

Problem-Oriented Policing

The P.O.P. deputy deals with a range of community problems and crime prevention issues. The goal is to understand and relieve community- and business-based problems by helping to develop solutions to address reoccurring problems.

One of the key functions of P.O.P. is to work with and empower citizens to recognize, identify, and assist in the resolution of problems and problem locations within the community.

The P.O.P. deputy's duties include:
  • Investigate chronic crime problem areas and nuisance complaints
  • Utilize a multi-agency approach to problem-solving by partnering with other agencies such as: code enforcement, fire departments, town managers, building departments, environmental health, probation, and children's services
  • Work with community groups to identify priority problems and neighborhood issues
  • Assist in crime prevention strategies
  • Utilize targeted enforcement tactics
  • Public outreach through meeting presentations
  • Coordinate Placer County Sheriff’s Office volunteer program
  • Communicate with detectives and patrol officers regarding chronic problem areas

Field CSO

The field community services officer (FCSO) is an augmentation to the patrol division. The term “field community services officer” or “FCSO” is used only to distinguish the differing duties between those of a traditional CSO and a CSO working in the field.

The FCSO is a non-sworn position assigned to the patrol division. The FCSO assists patrol by handling cold reports (burglary, fraud, theft, and vandalism), processing evidence, traffic control and other assigned duties where suspect contact is not necessary or probable.

The FCSO allows sworn deputies the ability to be more proactive and increase the effectiveness of patrol.

Youth and Community Outreach
The youth and community outreach deputy develops and maintains relationships with at-risk youth and provides educational programs that bolster the value of drug prevention and eradication in Placer County
