Tips for Parents:
- Be supportive of your kids. Compliment them on all their efforts, the strength of their character and their individuality.
- Get your kids involved in adult supervised activities. It may take awhile to find the right activity, but it's worth the effort.
- Help your kids develop tools they can use to get out of alcohol or drug related situations
and to resist peer pressures.
- Get to know your children’s friends and parents. Talk with those parents to make sure they share the same views on alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
- If your child wants to go to a party, call to make sure it will be parent supervised.
- Set curfews and house rules. Let children know the consequences of breaking these rules. Follow through with discipline related to consequences.
- Encourage open dialogue with your children. Make sure your children understand they can come to you with anything and you will be honest and open in answering them.
- Set a no-use rule for alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Educate yourself about drugs so that you can talk informatively with your children and answer their questions.
- Sit down for dinner or family time at least once a week. Use this time to talk.
- Get involved with your child’s life. Spend time with them. Get to know their concerns and show them how much they mean to you.
- If a problem does exist, don’t say “Not my child!” Get help.
