CORRECTIONAL OFFICER SELECTION STANDARDS |

When reviewing correctional officer candidates for employment with the Placer County Sheriff’s Department, our agency adheres to the same selection standards outlined by California law, which dictates selection requirements for any California correctional officer, and the California Corrections Standards Authority (CSA), a California State Commission, selection standards for employing correctional officers in California.
Corrections Standards Authority specifies the selection standards in Title 15, Article 2; which are in addition to the requirements set forth in Section 830 et seq. of the Penal Code and Section 1029 et seq. of the Government Code.
In addition to the above requirements our department requires that all candidates meet or exceed the requirements set forth for peace officers. By doing so, our agency ensures that we are employing individuals with “good moral character.”
- Be a citizen of the United States of a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship (Government code sections 1031(a) and 1031.5 and 24103)
- Be at least 18 years of age (Government code section 1031(b))
- Be fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record (Government Code sections 1030 and 1031(c))
- Be of good moral character, as determined by a thorough background investigation (Government Code section 1031(d))
- Be a high school graduate, pass the General Education Development test or have attained a two-year or four-year degree from an accredited institution (Government Code section 1031(e))
- Be free of any felony convictions (Government Code section 1029(a) (1))
