WHAT POSTITIONS ARE YOU CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR?

WHERE IS PLACER COUNTY LOCATED?

Placer County is located in beautiful Northern California, 80 miles northeast of San Francisco and 20 miles west of Reno. Placer County borders Sacramento, Nevada and El Dorado Counties as well as the State of Nevada. If traveling by air, the Sacramento International Airport is a 50 minute drive from Auburn, and Reno-Tahoe International Airport is a short drive from Lake Tahoe. There are smaller airports located in Auburn, Lincoln, Truckee-Tahoe and Blue Canyon. If traveling by car, Interstate 80 runs the length of the county, and is intersected by a network of well-developed rural roads, providing easy access to many areas.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office continuously recruits for qualified volunteers who are willing to donate a minimum of 100 hours per year to support the mission and goals of our agency and the community it serves.

Volunteers work in a variety of assignments throughout our agency.

Field volunteers assist patrol services by providing such functions as vacation checks, vehicle abatements, traffic control, saturation patrols and found property reports. Administrative volunteers provide staffing at the service centers and substations. Among their office duties these volunteers greet the public, answer phones, take cold reports, fingerprint and maintain office computer databases.
In addition to office and field work, volunteers assist with safety fair presentations, crime prevention and community outreach.

WHERE CAN I FIND OUT MORE INFORMATION REGARDING BECOMING A RESERVE DEPUTY SHERIFF?

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office is continuously seeking qualified candidates for the Reserve Deputy program. This unpaid volunteer opportunity is open to anyone who possesses a current California P.O.S.T. reserve level II or level I certificate, or a P.O.S.T. basic academy certificate. Reserve deputies work a variety of details, such as general patrol, civic functions, concerts, public safety needs, high school graduations and dances, football games, foot patrol at county fairs, and other local community events.

Explorer Post 901 is sponsored by the Placer County Sheriff’s Office. This successful program is designed to educate and involve young men and women (ages 14 – 20) in police operations and to interest them in law enforcement functions, whether they enter the field of law enforcement or not.

Placer County Law Enforcement Chaplaincy is a field service ministry to the members of Law Enforcement, their families, and the citizens of Placer County. PCLEC continually provides the service of trained, critical incident Chaplains on a 24 hour, 7 days a week basis. DOES THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE USE STUDENT INTERNS?

I AM CURRENTLY A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER OUTSIDE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA AND WANT TO APPLY WITH PLACER COUNTY SHERIFF, HOW DO I GO ABOUT GETTING MY TRAINING TRANSFERRED SO I AM ELIGIBLE?

If you have never worked as a law enforcement officer in the state of California you will need to work with POST www.post.ca.gov to see what is necessary to have a POST basic academy equivalency certificate issued in order to apply for a Deputy Sheriff I.

To apply for a Deputy Sheriff II, and you have never worked as a law enforcement officer in the state of California, you will need to work with POST to see what is necessary to have a POST basic academy equivalency certificate issued. The minimum qualifications for deputy sheriff II require possession of a CA POST basic certificate. Please visit POST’s website here to learn when POST issues this certificate.

Yes, in order to be a Deputy Sheriff you must have a valid CA P.O.S.T. basic academy certificate or basic academy equivalency certificate.

HOW CAN I BECOME A DEPUTY SHERIFF IF I HAVEN’T ATTENDED A POST BASIC ACADEMY?

You can put yourself through a POST academy. Visit www.post.ca.gov and select the quick link for basic training academies. There are a couple of academies semi-local to Placer County where you can obtain your basic academy certificate. Once you have your basic academy certificate you can then apply for the position of Deputy Sheriff I once it is open. The second option is to submit an interest card at www.jobsatplacercounty.com for the position of deputy sheriff trainee and you will be notified when we are accepting applications to potentially send someone to the academy.

IS THERE A PHYSICAL AGILITY EXAM FOR DEPUTY SHERIFF? WHAT DOES IT CONSIST OF?

Candidates for Deputy Sheriff Trainee, Deputy Sheriff I and Deputy Sheriff II must pass the POST job-related work sample test battery which consists of five physical agility job-task simulation tests. It will test several physical performance abilities identified as necessary in the field of law enforcement. Successful completion of each physical test as specified is mandatory. A candidate must compile a minimum of 384 points to pass the physical performance test as a whole. The faster each test battery is completed the more points the candidate receives. Time to point conversion charts are available for viewing on day of testing.

Obstacle Course
As rapidly as possible the candidate runs a 99 yard obstacle course consisting of several sharp turns, a number of curb-height obstacles, and a 34 inch high obstacle that must be vaulted. Two attempts at this test are allowed.

Solid Fence Climb
As rapidly as possible the candidate runs 5 yards to a solid fence, climbs over the fence, and continues to run another 25 yards. Two attempts at this test are allowed.

Chain Link Fence Climb
As rapidly as possible the candidate runs 5 yards to a chain link fence, climbs over the fence, and continues to run another 25 yards. Two attempts at this test are allowed.

Body Drag
The candidate is required to lift a 165 pound life-like dummy and drag the dummy 32 feet as rapidly as possible. Two attempts at this test are allowed.

500-yard Run
The candidate runs 500 yards. One attempt at this test is allowed.

 

WHAT IS THE SELECTION PROCESS FOR A DEPUTY SHERIFF?

Selected candidates who are certified to the Sheriff’s Office may be scheduled for an interview with our panel: those individuals who successfully pass oral board may be forwarded to the Undersheriff for a final hiring interview. Candidates that pass the our agency interviews will be required to complete a P.O.S.T. Personal History Statement and will be subject to a background investigation using P.O.S.T. guidelines to www.post.ca.gov. Upon receipt and review of the background report, a conditional offer of employment may be made, and the final candidates must then pass a pre-employment medical standards exam.

Our deputies can work a variety of assignments from the Jail, Courts or Patrol. We have patrol locations which include Auburn, South Placer, Foresthill, Colfax and North Lake Tahoe.

AFTER BEING HIRED, WHAT KIND OF TRAINING AM I PROVIDED AS A DEPUTY SHERIFF?

All deputies new to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office will go through a field training program. Field training is intended to facilitate a peace officer’s transition from the academic setting to the performance of general law enforcement uniformed patrol duties of the Placer County Sheriff’s Office. Although a Deputy graduating from the POST regular basic course (academy) has received a thorough introduction to basic law enforcement subjects, a Deputy cannot be expected to immediately assume the full responsibilities of an experienced Deputy. Newly assigned Deputies must receive additional training in the field, on actual calls for service, where they can learn from Deputies who already have practical patrol experience. Field training introduces a newly assigned Deputy to the personnel, procedures, policies and purposes of the Placer County Sheriff’s Office and provides the initial formal training specific to this our agency and the day-to-day duties of its Deputies.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office Training Unit provides approximately 60 to 80 hours annually of Advanced Officer training to our sworn staff which includes: legal updates, tactical scenarios, ongoing firearms qualifications, defensive tactics, emergency vehicle operations and much more. Most of the training that is provided to our sworn staff is POST certified. Our training consistently exceeds CA POST requirements. We are committed to the proper training of our staff to ensure the best possible officer safety and service to our citizens.

WHERE CAN I BE ASSIGNED TO WORK AS A CORRECTIONAL OFFICER?

As a Correctional Officer you will be assigned to work in the Jail.

AFTER BEING HIRED, WHAT KIND OF TRAINING AM I PROVIDED AS A CORRECTIONAL OFFICER?

All new correctional officers without prior experience will attend a 179 hour CORE course (correctional academy) where they will learn basic procedural and legal aspects for working in a custodial setting, physical skills and methods of controlling inmates in a confined setting.

In addition to the CORE course they will also go through a 12 week jail training program to orient them to the jail environment, the orders and procedures, and facility operations. Although a correctional officer graduating from the STC core course (academy) has received a thorough introduction to basic correctional subjects, a new correctional officer cannot be expected to immediately assume the full responsibilities of an experienced officer. The new correctional officer will be introduced to the necessary job skills in a structured fashion where they are interacting with jail inmates and facility operations under the supervision of a jail training officer.

Correctional officers at the jail receive a minimum of 24 hours of yearly update training that includes legal updates, changes to state laws that impact correctional institutions, computer training and physical skills training. Additionally, officers may receive additional training specific to alternate duty assignments that may be assigned to them.

WHAT PAY INCENTIVES ARE AVAILABLE TO A CORRECTIONAL OFFICER?

Some of the following pay incentives are negotiated items between the county and the union. These incentives can change with contract changes.
  • 7.5% if assigned to night shift
  • $1,065 yearly uniform allowance, paid bi-weekly
  • 5% bilingual pay, added to the base hourly rate, depending on assignment and qualifying exam
  • Call back pay – receive a minimum of 2 hours pay at 1.5 times, receive up to 1 hour pay at 1.5 times when authorized work is performed but not required to physically return to work, depending on assignment
  • Canine pay - if assigned to the canine unit, receive $225 per month for a county owned canine or $275 per month for an employee owned canine
  • Critical incident response team - if assigned to the critical incident response team receive $125 per month
  • Jail Training Officer – if designated as a jail training officer receive additional 5% of the base hourly rate on all hours providing training
  • Longevity pay - after 5 years at top step as a correctional officer service receive 5% of base hourly rate

All dispatchers new to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office will go through a dispatch training program. Dispatch training consists of the necessary skills and knowledge required to working in our communications center. All entry level public safety dispatchers for our agency must attend the POST Public Safety Dispatchers Basic Course where they will receive a minimum of 120 hours of course instruction. The course prepares each student for the basic roles, responsibilities, and duties of a public safety dispatcher within the law enforcement agency.

WHAT IS THE TESTING PROCESS FOR A CIVILIAN POSITION?

If your application is accepted, you will be notified via the email address provided on your application of the confirmed date and location prior to the scheduled examination, if there is one. Notification for each phase of the recruitment process will be by email.
