Public and Records Unit provides a variety of services and information to the community. Our mission is to deliver professional, courteous service and timely accurate information in accordance with record release and privacy laws.

What does the Public and Records Unit do?
The Public and Records Unit assists citizens in many areas. Citizens can contact us when they need assistance with the following:
- Copies of reports for citizens that were victims or involved parties, insurance companies, attorneys, and other law enforcement agencies.
- Accident reports in the towns of Colfax and Loomis for victims or involved parties, insurance companies, attorneys, and other law enforcement agencies
- Finger printing and live scans for certification, licensing, and employment background checks
- Some county permits and license applications (see Permits/License)
- Registering convicted criminals for specific drug, sex, gang, or arson offenses
Most services require an appointment please call prior to coming to the office.
Vehicle release
The Sheriff’s Public and Records unit is responsible for collecting fees and releasing the following towed vehicles:
- Impounded vehicles 5, 10, 15, and 30 day holds
- Towed and Stored (No Hold)
- Recovered
- Abandoned
- Repossessed

- No releases on Holiday’s There areTWO steps to getting your car released:
First.
Call 530-889-7812 (hours are listed above). This is so we can give accurate, updated, and specific information on the release of your vehicle. We can save you the trip to the office if the vehicle can not be released until a specific date.
Second.
When coming to the office make sure you have the following with you:
- Proof of ownership
- Current /Vaild Registration and/or Moving Permit or Temporary Operating permit
- Valid drivers license or a driver with a valid drivers license
- Fees in exact cash or check - $75.00 to be paid to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office
- A copy of the vehicle tow report is helpful
Note: In addition to the Sheriff’s fees, tow companies charge daily storage fees. As fees may vary please check with the tow company for the actual charge.
