Cross Canal Watershed Flood Control Plan

The Placer County Flood Control District and Water Conservation District sponsored development of this 1993 dated flood control plan to study the area drained by Auburn and Markham Ravine, Coon, Curry and Pleasant Grove Creeks. These creeks and their tributaries drain approximately 292 square miles of northwestern Placer County and southeastern Sutter County. The Natomas Cross Canal carries the combined flow of these creeks to the Sacramento River. This study was prepared to respond to concerns over potential increases in flooding in the lower portion of the watershed due to development pressures upstream. Portions of the study area within Placer County have planned land uses that allow for significant industrial, commercial, and residential development which would normally increase flood flows and volumes. An extensive area upstream of the Placer/Sutter County line floods along many of the major tributaries, attributed mainly to inadequately sized crossings, poor channel capacity and private levee and grading practices. The Plan evaluates the causes of existing flooding problems, makes recommendations and includes funding recommendations.
