The Transportation Division consists of four coordinated sections: 1) Traffic Engineering, 2) Transportation Planning, 3) Transit Services, and 4) Engineering.
Traffic Engineering provides a wide range of services including traffic signal operations, evaluating speed limits, collecting accident information, performing traffic counts, and responding to public concerns with regard to traffic issues.
The Transportation Planning section provides for the short and long-range transportation needs of the County, such as predicting future traffic, analyzing traffic impacts from development projects, and administering a Countywide Traffic Fee Program. Transportation plans are coordinated with Federal, State, and local agencies.
Placer County Transit (PCT) operates a fleet of 16 buses serving the unincorporated areas of the County from Alta to Roseville. PCT contracts with the Cities of Colfax, Rocklin, and the Town of Loomis for public transit services. For more information see the PCT page.
Tahoe Area Regional Transit (TART) operates 9 buses serving the North Lake Tahoe region of Placer County and the Highway 89 corridor between Tahoe City and Truckee. For more information see the TART page.
The Engineering Division is responsible for the design and construction of projects involving public roads, bridges, storm-drain systems, and other similar facilities. Many of the projects provide needed safety or capacity improvements, such as traffic signals, bike lanes, and turn lanes. Others are intended to extend the useful life of existing public facilities, such as bridge rehabilitation and roadway reconstruction projects.
Engineering also provides construction management, inspection, and materials testing for publicly and privately-financed public works projects. In doing so, County residents can be assured of product consistency. Within the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Engineering Division regularly designs and builds erosion control projects intended to reduce the transport of sediment into Lake Tahoe.
Staff of the Engineering Division also includes the County Right-of-Way Agent who is responsible for appraising and acquiring the land and easements needed to construct projects. The abandonment of existing public easements and sale of surplus property are included in the responsibilities of the Right-of-Way Agent.
