Adoption & Lost Pets

Click here to search for lost and adoptable pets at the Auburn & Tahoe Vista Animal Shelters.
Placer County Animal Services cares for thousands of animals each year. Most are wonderful animals who are waiting to be adopted into a loving, caring and life time home.

If you have lost a pet:

  1. It is important that you continue to go to your local animal shelters at least every other day.
    • Fill out a lost report at the shelter,
    • Post a lost flyer at the shelter, and
    • Check the “Found Book”, “Injured Report”, and the “DOA Report” at the shelter.
  2. Contact the Veterinarians in the area you lost your pet to see if your pet is there.
  3. Check the Placer County Web site http://www.placer.ca.gov/animal and click the link to view lost and adoptable pets, or check in “Lost a Pet” on www.petharbor.com daily. Placer County Animal Services posts all incoming stray animals at this site. Type in your zip code and select “Placer County Animal Shelter, Auburn” if you live in the Auburn area. Select “Placer County Animal Shelter, Tahoe
    Vista” for the Tahoe area.
  4. Post flyers with your pet’s picture where you think your pet was lost.
  5. Ask your neighbors or go door-to-door where your pet was lost.
  6. Post your lost pet on Craigslist.org, Petfinder.org, and Petharbor.com.
  7. Check with surrounding shelters to see if your pet was taken to a near-by shelter.
  8. Place an ad in the LOST section of your local paper and note where you lost your pet.

  • Be at least 18 years old with a picture identification.
  • Provide proper food, water, exercise, shelter, vaccinations, medical care, grooming, identification, lifelong care, and affection for your new pet.
  • If you rent or lease, you must have permission for a pet from the owner or manager of your rental unit.
  • All animals must be altered prior to leaving the shelter.
  • Pay adoption fee; dogs are $114 and cats are $93.

The Adoption fees for dogs include the cost of the heartworm test (for dogs over 6 months), first heartworm preventative pill, frontline, first distemper/parvo & bordatella vaccination, rabies if over 4 months, deworming, and microchipping. Animal Health Care and Holding Periods

Each animal receives vaccination upon intake unless they have a current license on them. Dogs receive, Bordatella (kennel cough), and DA2PP (distemper, parvo combo). Cats receive Rabies and FVRCP (feline upper respiratory) immunizations.

Animals are held 72 hours from the time of impoundment not including Sundays or holidays, unless they appear to be owned (ie. they have a collar with tags.) Then the hold period is 10 days not including Sundays or holidays. The holding period for livestock is 14 days. After the holding period the animals are put through a behavior evaluation to learn what type of home the animal would do best in. At that time dogs receive a Heartworm test and cats receive a FELV/FIV test. And then put up for adoption if they pass.

Under state law and county ordinance, animals adopted from Placer County Animal Centers in Auburn and Tahoe Vista must be spayed or neutered before they are taken home. This has proven to be an effective way to reduce animal overpopulation. The cost of pet spaying and neutering is included in the adoption fee, along with the cost of the other animal health care measures.
