Licensing & Fees
Licenses are required for all dogs 4 months of age or older by law. If you move in to Placer County or obtain a new dog, the dog must be licensed with in 30 days. If the dog is licensed in another county of California, the license must be transferred to a Placer County license within 30 days. You can be cited and fined if your dog is unlicensed.
A dog license is required for all dogs in Placer County.
- The cities of Auburn, Roseville and Rocklin handle their own animal licensing and animal control enforcement. Contact your city government for licensing details. For more information visit the following websites:
- Placer County animal Services handles the licensing for Colfax, Lincoln and Loomis.
A license tells everyone that your pet is not a homeless stray. Animals found wearing identification are more likely to find their way home than animals with out. Placer County Animal Services will call you and/or send you a letter, if your pet comes to the Shelter wearing a license. Even indoor only dogs get out sometimes so it is very important that your dog is wearing a license. Animals that come to the shelter wearing a license are held for a longer hold period and the shelter staff makes every attempt to contact you to get you and your animal reunited.
Placer County License fees help to support the return of over 2,000 lost dogs, cats, and other animals help adopt homeless dogs and cats to new families every year. Other services funded by pet licensing include:
- Investigation of animal neglect or cruelty
- Spay/neuter programs that help reduce animal over-population
- Community education services.
