Senior Health - Fall Prevention
Falls are the leading cause of unintentional home injury.
- Seniors over age 65 account for over one-third of all falls.
- Falls are the leading cause of injury deaths and the most common cause of nonfatal injuries and hospital admissions for trauma.
- In 2003 more than 1.8 million seniors were treated in emergency departments for fall related injuries, and 421,000 were hospitalized.
- Among people ages 75 years and older, those who fell were four to five times more likely to be admitted to long term care facilities.
Do you wonder if you or someone you know is at risk for falls at home? Take this short quiz on home risk assessment:
- Have you fallen within the last year?
- Does it take you more than one try to rise from a chair?
- You do not have grab bars, skid strips and handrails for steadying your balance?
- You do not have lights within easy reach from your bed?
- Do you take medications that may cause dizziness, or interfere with balance?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, please call (530) 889-7141 for a more in-depth home safety assessment for fall prevention.
