Bear Resistant Garbage can enclosures

Bears that through residental garbage in areas as the  Lake Tahoe Region in Placer County, have been a growing problem.

In August, 2001, the Placer County Board of Supervisors adopted a bear-resistant garbage can enclosure ordinance, for portions of Placer County above 5000 feet in elevation.  The ordinance requires that new residential construction or an addition of more than 500 square feet of living space, have bear-resistant garbage containers.

The Board of Supervisors revised the ordinance in 2003.   The revised Placer County Code for Bear Bins is available. (.pdf format)

Approved bear-resistant garbage can enclosures have been compiled into a list.

Inclusion in the list assumes that the enclosures will be installed in accordance with the requirements of other regulatory agencies, such as those of Placer County Department of Public Works and the Tahoe Regional Planning AgencyIt is further understood that any enclosures may be removed from the list if found not to comply with the Placer County Code.
