The Placer County Archives and Research Center is a repository for records generated by the county and a local history and genealogy research center. The original collection of county records was removed from the courthouse during the renovation of the building in the early 1980s and includes records dating from the beginning of the county in 1851. Several collections of maps, documents and letters have been transferred to the Archives and Research Center from the Placer County Museums Division Collections Management Facility where some have been housed since the establishment of the county museum in the late 1940s. The collection also includes original bound copies of the Placer Herald newspapers, Placer County's first newspaper, from 1852 through 1965.
