Placer Adult Literacy Service (PALS)
Upcoming Tutor Training


Make a difference in someone's life... be an adult literacy volunteer!  Won't you consider sharing the gift of reading?  Help the people in your community who wish to improve their reading and writing skills!  The next tutor training will be held at the Loomis Library on the following dates:

Friday, June 20th, 6:00 p.m. ~ 9:00 p.m.
and
Saturday, June 21st, 9:00 a.m. ~ 4:00 p.m
.

To complete the course you must attend both days.  There is no cost to attend.  Participants must pre-register so that adequate materials can be supplied.

A light snack will be available on Friday evening and a light breakfast will be provided on Saturday morning.  Participants must bring their own lunch to the training as time will not allow to go off site.

Volunteer tutors work with adults that need help with basic literacy skills.

  • Learners are assessed, then matched one-on-one with a tutor.
  • Tutor and learner meet at a time and place convenient to both. 

Services are:

  • Free
  • Confidential
  • One-on-One
  • Learner Centered
  • Learner Goal Oriented

A learner in the program should be:

  • 16 years or older
  • Out of school
  • Able to speak English well enough to request services
  • Able to meet with tutor on regular basis

A tutor in the program should be:

  • 18 years or older
  • Relatively proficient in both spoken and written English
  • Able to participate in a 10-hour tutor training
  • Able to meet with learner on regular basis

Tutor Trainings:

Currently, all trainings are held at the Auburn Library and require some preparation prior to the workshop.  Please call the office for more information. 

Literacy support Council of Placer County is a non-profit formed in 1991 whose sole purpose is the support of the Placer County Library Adult Literacy Service.  Meetings are held 1 p.m. the 4th Tuesday of the month in the meeting room of the library listed below.  The public is welcome.

Meeting Dates and Locations.  All meetings are at 1:00 p.m.

March 25, 2008 - Rocklin Library
April 22, 2008 - Loomis Library
May 27, 2008 - Auburn Library
June 24, 2008 - Rocklin Library
July, August - No Meeting
September 23, 2008 - Auburn Library
October 28, 2008 - Loomis Library
November 18, 2008 - Auburn Library
December - No Meeting 

Members can participate by serving on committees such as the Speaker’s Bureau, Membership, New Reader Outreach, Newsletter, and Publicity.  Membership dues range from $10 for an individual to $150 to sponsor an adult learner.  Additional information is available from the Literacy office (530-886-4530) or from Dick Cushman (530-878-2070).
