Placer County’s modern Juvenile Detention Facility, located in DeWitt Center, opened on March 2, 2000. Youth who sustain an arrest for law violations in Placer County may be delivered to the Juvenile Detention Facility by one of the law enforcement agencies within the county. Detention beyond 48 hours requires that formal charges be filed by the District Attorney’s office and must be authorized by the Juvenile Court. Juveniles may be detained while Court proceedings are pending or while awaiting a Court commitment to another facility. Short-term commitments to the Juvenile Detention Facility can also be ordered as a sanction for misconduct and as a condition of probation. On average, approximately 50 juveniles, male and female, are housed at the Juvenile Detention Facility.
