Cooling Center Now Closed

With support from local emergency services agencies, Placer County  opened a cooling center in the Sierra Buildingat the Gold Country Fairgrounds in Auburn earlier this week.

The weather has cooled, and therefore the center no longer needed.  It has been closed.

American Medical Response paramedics contracted through Sierra-Sacramento Valley Emergency Medical Services, County Health and Human Services staff and staff from the Auburn Police Department were on duty as needed, with support from the Placer County Sheriff’s Department, the Office of Emergency Services and the American Red Cross.

Placer County fire agencies have been checking on residents in facilities vulnerable to heat, while Placer County Health and Human Services In Home Support Services staff have been checking the welfare of 1,000 vulnerable seniors and persons with disabilities.

County emergency services officials have regularly called hospitals, cities and other agencies over the last few days, but no unmet needs have been found.

On Wednesday the Governor’s Office directed that the California Department of Food and Agriculture make each state-owned fairgrounds a cooling center, which includes the Gold Country Fairgrounds.
