Jackpine Parking Lot to Open
Jackpine Parking Lot to Open
October 19, 2006
The Placer CountyBoard of Supervisors will hold an opening ceremony on Monday, Oct. 23, 2006, at 11 a.m., for a new public parking lot in Tahoe City. The lot is part of the County's continuing efforts to improve the economic climate in the Tahoe Basin.

This 40-space lot on Jackpine Streetin conjunction with another lot in Kings Beachthat opened last fall, and two others in the planning stages will benefit residents, visitors and businesses.

"In order for people to patronize the businesses in these Tahoe communities, they need to be able to get to them," said Placer County Supervisor Bruce Kranz, whose district includes a portion of Lake Tahoe. "This lot, along with the others, will make it easier for residents and visitors alike to do business and that will contribute to the area's economic health."

The Placer County Redevelopment Agency used tax increment and bond proceeds to fund development of this lot. The project includes preservation of heritage trees and a stream environment zone that parallels the lot. Tahoe Cityapproved pavers and lighting were continued along the sidewalk facing Jackpine Street. A portion of the parking lot will utilize pervious concrete as a test for future lots.  The use of pervious concrete allows moisture to travel through the surface. Conventional construction methods allow moisture to pool on the surface of the parking lot and run off, collecting sediment and pollutants, which can end up in Lake Tahoe.

Oversight of the design and construction of the lot was by the Placer County Department of Public Works, which will also handle maintenance and snow removal.

In addition to the Jackpine lot and the previously opened lot on Brook Avenuein KingsBeach, two other parking lots, one on Minnow Avenueand another on Salmon Avenuein KingsBeach, are in the development phase.
