Recovery Happens Celebration Planned

August 07, 2008

Good food, live music and fun for children await the public Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Recovery Happens 2008, a family fun celebration held to acknowledge people who are on their way to overcoming alcohol or drug dependency.

Open to the entire community, this free event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Auburn Recreation Park, located near Old Town Auburn.

The eighth annual Recovery Happens will feature a free barbecue and treats, live music by Dudley and the Doo-Rights and a wide variety of entertainment for children.

Recovery Happens is part of a nationwide celebration that supports people seeking to recover from substance abuse and recognizes their many success stories.

The celebration also seeks to spotlight the many prevention, treatment and recovery programs that are available in Placer County. The Honorable Colleen Nichols, Placer County Superior Court, will be the keynote speaker.

“In Placer County, many people are living productive, satisfying lives as a result of their recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction,” said Maureen Bauman, Director of the Placer County’s Adult System of Care. “Many have received support through Placer’s Drug Court, others through the county’s community-based Health and Human Services Systems of Care programs or our contracted substance abuse treatment providers. People in treatment very often choose recovery with 945 persons annually completing Placer substance abuse treatment programs.

“Conservative estimates show that for every $1 invested in treatment for addiction, there is a return of $7 in reduced drug-related crime, criminal justice costs and losses from theft. When you add the savings to health care, total savings can exceed costs by a ratio of 12 to 1. Treatment truly is a benefit to our entire community.”

Organizers of the Sept. 13 Recovery Happens celebration include several county programs specializing in substance abuse treatment and recovery including the Adult System of Care, the Family Resource Centers of Placer County; MIC (Men/Infants/Children), Community Recovery Resources/ Hope House Perinatal Program and Koinonia.

Other sponsors include the Eagle Counseling Center, Rocklin Community Counseling Center, Progress House, Hope, Help & Healing, New Leaf Counseling Center, Sierra Council on Alcoholism & Drug Dependency, Re- Entry Inc., Aegis Medical Systems, UC Extension’s Ready to Succeed, and Placer County Agricultural Marketing Program along with Placer’s Welcome Center.
