Mental Health Prevention and Early Intervention Plan

November 25, 2008

The public comment period for Placer County’s Assignment of Funds to support three Statewide Prevention and Early Intervention Initiatives as well as the funding decisions around one-time Prevention and Early Intervention funding has begun. These two efforts support the recent Prevention and Early Intervention plan that is currently under public review.

Both the Assignment of Funds to the three Statewide PEI Initiatives and One-time PEI Funding decisions reflect the input from a 40-member community steering committee that has been a part of the planning process in Placer since January of this year.

The public comment period will remain open until December 22nd according to the Placer County Health and Human Services Department. The community is invited to make comments in person, by mail, or email over the next month.

The three PEI Statewide Initiatives, to be administered by the California Department of Mental Health (DMH), are: Suicide Prevention, Student Mental Health Initiative, and Stigma and Discrimination Reduction. DMH will implement these three projects contingent upon Counties assigning the funds. Placer County has determined it will assign its funds over a 4-year period to the Statewide effort.

The PEI One-time Funding decisions relate directly to the Prevention and Early Intervention plan that is currently under review. The one-time funding will include additional support for: suicide and depression prevention efforts, youth development, Native American capacity building and outreach and education to youth and families.

The intended outcomes for Prevention and Early Intervention efforts are to reduce stigma around mental illness, prevent suicide, reduce the incidence of at-risk children and youth in school failure rates or entering the juvenile justice system, improve family function, and reduce acute cases of mental illness.

The two documents are available for review in hard copy format at all Placer County libraries and Family Resource Centers.
