Placer County is updating the Housing Element of the County General Plan. The Housing Element sets out the goals, policies and implementation programs for the planning and development of housing throughout the county. Once adopted, the revised Housing Element will be in effect until 2013. California law requires that the Element be completed by the county and submitted to the California Department of Housing and Community Development for review and certification.
There will be two workshops to give the public and other interested parties an opportunity to offer input and review the draft policy and program document. The county will gather input from these workshops and incorporate it into the final version of the Housing Element.
Because public input on housing issues and strategies is critical to the update, there will be workshops on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe and in Auburn. Planning staff will explain the process for the update, discuss the policy and program document, and accept public comment. Those two workshops are planned for:
- Thursday, June 5, 2008, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm at the Community Development Resource Center, 3091 County Center Drive, DeWitt Center, Auburn; and,
- Tuesday, June 10, 2008, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at the Tahoe City Public Utility District Board Room, 221 Fairway Drive, Tahoe City.
The updating of the Element is being coordinated by the Placer County Planning Department and will be a collaborative effort between residents, policy makers, housing developers, special needs interest groups and other County departments. The goal of the update is to produce a balanced and responsive Housing Element that meets statutory requirements, addresses public concerns, fits within the overall General Plan and can be a working document.
The draft Background Report and Policy Document sections of the Housing Element are now available for review on the County’s website: http://www.placer.ca.gov/Departments/CommunityDevelopment/Planning/Documents/HousingElement.aspx
"This is our third round of workshops to gather public input on the Housing Element. We are on schedule to submit the document for State approval by July 1," said Michael Johnson, Planning Director for Placer County.
