Placer County’s branch libraries in Auburn, Granite Bay and Rocklin will open a little later and close earlier on some days beginning Sept. 13.
The Placer County Library announced the new schedules this week, saying changes at the three branch libraries will result in a total net reduction of nine hours per week.

“The schedule was prepared following an analysis of circulation activity to ensure that the reductions would have as little impact on the public as possible,” county Director of Library Services Mark R. Parker said.
Though the new schedules will result in a net reduction of nine hours per week, the three libraries will stay open an hour later on Fridays to make the schedules as convenient as possible for library patrons.
Service hours will remain the same at all other branch libraries and the Bookmobile.
Hours were reduced at the three branch libraries because the library system has several vacant positions that will remain unfilled during the 2008-09 fiscal year and the library needs to reduce its reliance on extra-help staff. The schedule will be reviewed periodically to determine its impact on public services.
County departments will leave more than 200 staff positions vacant during this fiscal year. Like counties throughout California, Placer County is facing budget challenges because of the nation’s economic slowdown, the state’s budget crisis and increasing costs.
The new schedule for the three branch libraries was presented to the Board of Supervisors at a budget workshop on Aug. 12.
