Pet Health Forums Scheduled

A series of “Let’s Talk” Community Forums are being held locally to provide information about pet issues. Each features a speaker well-respected in their field of expertise.

The sessions are free, and will be held at the Applegate Civic Center, 18014 Applegate Road in Applegate. Each begins at 7 p.m.

The forums are being presented through the support of the Placer County Animal Trust Fund by Friends of Placer County Animal Shelter, the Auburn Area Animal Rescue Foundation (AAARF) and Fieldhaven Feline Rescue.

On Thursday, April 23, Cecilia Villaverde, DVM, PhD will speak on “What’s in Your Pet’s Bowl?” Dr. Villaverde graduated from Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (Spain) Veterinary School in 2000 and obtained a PhD in animal nutrition in 2005. She worked as a post doctoral researcher at US Davis in feline nutrition for two years, and has been working on a small animal clinical nutrition residency for the last two years.

On Thursday, May 28, James Young, DVM will speak on “Pet Emergencies.” Dr. Young is a graduate of UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and owner of the Atlantic Street Veterinary Hospital since 1997. He established the Pet Emergency Center in 1999 to serve as a regional referral emergency and urgent care facility. An international speaker and writer on emerging veterinary technologies, he served on the Board of Directors for Placer SPCA, supports local pet charities and volunteers for local events in Placer County and Davis.

On Thursday, June 25, Jyothi Robertson, DVM will speak on “Preventative Medicine and Contagious Diseases (including Zoonotic Disease). Dr. Robertson is a Resident in Shelter Medicine at the University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine. After graduating Magna cum laude from Princeton University, she began working at the Center for Comparative Medicine, UC Davis, on post-graduate doctoral research in Nutrition/Physiology. She has more than 20 years of laboratory experience in infectious disease, and began working on independent research projects at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee at the age of 10
