Making better use of Placer County’s heritage and culture to promote local tourism will be the focus of a workshop to be held April 29-30.
The Regional Cultural and Heritage Tourism Workshop’s main program will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 30 in the Lincoln City Hall, 600 Sixth St.
The agenda includes:
- A case study by Steve Frisch of the Sierra Business Council focused on Murphys, a Calaveras County foothills community that often is called the “Queen of the Sierra” and has been named by Frommer’s as “one of the top 10 coolest small towns in America;”
- A resource panel with speakers who will discuss Preserve America, the National Scenic Byways Program and the National Park Service’s National Heritage Areas Program;
- A media panel featuring representatives from three magazines: Sunset, Sierra Heritage and The Vine Times; and
- An afternoon session where working groups will tackle hands-on projects.
A key goal of the workshop is using a collaborative process to stimulate creation of an action plan for cultural and heritage tourism.
The April 30 program will get under way with an 8 to 9:15 a.m. tour of Feats of Clay XXII, a ceramic-works competition held at the Gladding, McBean Terra Cotta Factory in Lincoln.
On Wednesday, April 29, the program will feature an afternoon tour of local cultural and heritage attractions and an opening reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Flower Farm Inn in Loomis.
The workshop’s target audience is tourism professionals, chambers of commerce, businesses that cater to tourists, tour operators and guides, city and county officials, arts organizations, museums, historical societies and others interested in helping promote local tourism.
