'Recovery Happens' Celebration Planned

August 17, 2009

National Recovery Month is recognized each year in Placer County with an impactful and empowering celebration of freedom from addiction called Recovery Happens. This event is intended to celebrate recovery and highlight program successes at the individual, family and community levels. This will be done through the telling of success stories in a variety of settings in every community. This year’s theme is “Join The Voices For Recovery – Together We Learn, Together We Heal”.

Good food, live music and fun for children await the public on Sat., Sept. 19 at the 2009 Recovery Happens. This free event is open to the public and will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Auburn Recreation Park near Old Town Auburn. This year’s event has added emphasis on health and wellness in our community.

The ninth annual Recovery Happens will feature a free barbecue and treats, live music by Dudley and the Doo-Rights and a variety of entertainment and activities for children. There will be a number of community interest booths with informative literature and valuable give-aways.

Recovery Happens is a celebration to acknowledge people who are on their way to overcoming alcohol or drug dependency. The celebration also seeks to spotlight the many prevention, treatment and recovery programs that are available in Placer County. The Master of Ceremonies will be Leonard Brown, a well-recognized individual in our community. Speakers will include Honorable Colleen Nichols of Placer County Superior Court and Board of Supervisors’ Jim Holmes.

For the past nine years, the County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed September to be National Alcohol & Drug Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery Month in Placer County.

Organizers of the Sept. 19 Recovery Happens celebration include county programs and organizations specializing in substance abuse treatment and recovery: the Adult System of Care; New Leaf Counseling Center; Sierra Family Services; CORR Hope House; Progress House; Koinonia; Re-Entry Program; Pacific Educational Services; Child Abuse Prevention Council; Eagle Recovery; Rocklin Community Counseling Center; Progress House; Sierra Council on Alcoholism & Drug Dependency; Full Circle Treatment Center; Aegis Medical Systems; the Placer County Welcome Center; and Hope, Health and Healing.
