Beginning in mid-March 2010, Census form packages will be mailed or delivered to every household in the United States. The packages include the Census questionnaire and a postage-paid, return envelope. The 10 questions contained on the Census form will help count every resident of the United States.
For Placer County residents, that translates to millions in federal funds for local communities.
And the 10 questions only take about 10 minutes to answer.
The importance of a complete count for the Census is multi-faceted. The Census count will help determine where $400 billion in federal funding will be distributed each year. Communities can receive federal funding for things like:
In addition, the Census also determines the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Placer County is working with local groups to ensure that areas with hard-to-count populations are accurately included in the census. The Kings Beach-Tahoe Vista area at Lake Tahoe and Sheridan in the northwest portion of the county were identified as the hardest to count areas in Placer County in the previous Census.
The Census will set up Questionnaire Assistance Centers (QAC) throughout the county. At these QAC, residents can get assistance in filling out the Census form, or get answers to any questions they may have about the Census process. Additionally, the Census will set up "Be Counted" Centers which will have self help assistance for those with questions about the Census or needing forms or other materials. For a list of these Centers, see the chart below.
Despite having several areas that are classified as hard to count, overall, Placer County’s return rate is above the national average.
The Census, required by the U.S Constitution and conducted every 10 years, aims to count all residents, both citizens and non-citizens. All information obtained by the Census is confidential and protected by U.S. Law.
The Census Bureau asks that residents answer the 10 questions on the form and return it in the accompanying postage-paid envelope. Those residents who do not return the form will be visited in person by a census taker. A census taker is a person from your community who is hired by the Census Bureau to make sure that your neighborhood gets represented as accurately as possible. The census taker's primary responsibility is to collect census information from residences that have not sent back their 2010 Census form.
As the Centers become operational, their hours of business may change. Please visit this page for updates.
