Supervisors OK Project To Build Safe Routes To Sheridan School
April 05, 2011
The Placer County Board of Supervisors today approved a resolution that authorized the advertising of bids for a project that will create safer routes for children to take to Sheridan Elementary School. The Sheridan Safe Routes to School Project will entail building multi-use paths on streets leading to the school. Also slated for construction are paths adjacent to the school perimeter, a bus loading area and a four-way stop at the corner of 10th Street and Rioso Road.
The campus, in addition to providing preschool and elementary education, also serves as a collection point for middle and high school students who ride buses to Lincoln. Currently, when walking or riding bicycles to school, children do not have a designated pedestrian and bike area and share the paved streets with automobile traffic.
“I’m excited this project is moving forward and impressed by the collaboration between the Sheridan Elementary School, the Sheridan Municipal Advisory Council (MAC) and the county in shaping this project to meet the needs of the community,” said Placer County Supervisor and current Chairman, Robert Weygandt. “The Sheridan Elementary School is a tremendous asset and one I’ll continue to work hard to support.”
The project came as a result of a grant that was submitted by school principal Kris Knutson several years ago. Knutson said when he first arrived at the school, the biggest complaint he heard was that the kids walked in the street on their way to and from school. When he investigated, he learned that was the only place they could walk as the streets are bordered by ditches.
“We’re all very excited for the project to get to this stage,” said Knutson. “It’s been a long time coming and we’re happy to see it come to completion.”
The project is 100 percent reimbursable through the Federal Safe Routes to School Program and funding for construction of the project is included in the 2010-11 Fiscal Year budget. The estimated cost of the project is $255,550.
