County Working With Partners To Open Emergency Shelters If Needed

February 28, 2011

Placer County plans to open an overnight emergency shelter in Foresthill beginning Saturday, Feb. 26 if power has not been restored to the community by then.

The shelter would be open from 4 p.m. Saturday through 8 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 27 in the Foresthill Veterans Memorial Hall, 24601 Harrison Road. The shelter would be opened in cooperation with the Capital Region Chapter of the American Red Cross.

The facility would be heated with a generator provided by the county and meals would be provided by the Red Cross.

Fliers will be distributed at key gathering places in Foresthill to let residents know the shelter will be open if needed.

The Foresthill shelter may be open overnight on Sunday and Monday, Feb. 28 if residents remain without power.

The shelter plans are part of Placer County’s response to power outages caused by Friday’s storms in three foothill communities: Foresthill, Colfax and Alta-Dutch Flat.

In Alta-Dutch Flat, Placer County is working with the Alta Fire Protection District on arrangements for opening a shelter Saturday night if needed. Fire officials said late Friday an informal canvass of the community did not find anyone who will need shelter over the weekend if power remains out, however.

More information will be provided as it becomes available.

For Colfax residents who will need shelter Saturday night if power is not restored, Placer County is working with The Gathering Inn, a faith-based organization that operates nomadic shelters in Placer County.

Overnight Saturday, the Gathering Inn plans to open an extreme weather shelter at a church in Auburn. Placer County Transit will pick up Colfax residents at 5 p.m. at the Colfax Amtrak station if they need shelter, but do not have transportation to Auburn. The station is at the intersection of Railroad and Church streets.
