The Placer County Economic Development Board is seeking to fill three of its seats: a newly created position for a representative of local nonprofit organizations and soon-to-be vacant positions for education and utility representatives.
Placer County currently is seeking applications for all three positions. The deadline for applying is Nov. 23.
The Placer County Board of Supervisors will ultimately confirm appointments after nominations are approved by the Economic Development Board.
Known informally as the EDB, the latter board is an advisory body that assists the county and local municipalities with their business attraction and retention efforts. It promotes the creation of new jobs and tax revenue and supports tourism, agribusiness, film production and workforce development initiatives.
The two-year terms of the EDB’s current education and utility representatives are set to expire at the end of the year. The terms of the three newly appointed members will begin Jan. 1, 2012 and end Dec. 31, 2013.
The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to expand the EDB to include a nonprofit representative. On Sept. 15, the EDB voted unanimously to recommend creating a 15th seat so nonprofit organizations would have a voice at its meetings.
Placer County Supervisor Jennifer Montgomery and county Director of Economic Development David C. Snyder explained the need for the new seat in a letter to nonprofit organizations, noting that last year the county adopted a Economic Development Board Roadmap that charts the future course of economic development efforts in Placer County.
“We are now in the implementation phase and the board is hopeful that this newly formed seat will contribute countywide perspective on behalf of nonprofit organizations in Placer County,” the letter explained.
Supervisor Montgomery is chair of the EDB this year. She and Supervisor Robert M. Weygandt represent the Board of Supervisors on the advisory body.
The EDB also has elected-official representatives from the town of Loomis and the cities of Auburn, Colfax, Lincoln, Rocklin and Roseville. The city councils in the five cities and the Town Council in Loomis select their representatives.
The new nonprofit representative will join members from agriculture, education, utilities, tourism, healthcare and manufacturing as technical advisors on the EDB.
The EDB’s quarterly meetings typically take place at 3 p.m. on the third Thursdays of January, April, June and September. At least one meeting is held at North Lake Tahoe each year.
