Board of Supervisors Approves Medicaid Coverage Expansion Program

July 27, 2012

The Placer County Medicaid Coverage Expansion (MCE) Program was approved by the Board of Supervisors on July 24 and is pending final approval by the federal government.

If all goes as planned, the county Health and Human Services Department expects an August 1 implementation date and will begin enrolling members in the plan.

Placer MCE is a health insurance program for eligible Placer County residents. It provides expanded services and eligibility for qualifying low-income adults 19 to 64 years of age.

The program was made possible by a federal Medicaid waiver obtained by the California Department of Health Care Services that makes federal Medicaid funds available to match funds the county spends providing health services to eligible residents. To participate, Placer County had to demonstrate that it could meet extensive federal requirements and build the required health care provider network necessary for the program.
