Public Input Sought for Community Wildfire Protection Plan Update

Placer County is in the process of updating the 2008 version of its “Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) for the West Slope of the Sierra Nevada in Placer County.” The plan identifies types and locations of fire fuels and potential causes of fire ignition. This information is used to reduce the threat of wildfire to homes, businesses and communities and to mitigate effects from wildfires.
The plan is being updated in cooperation with the Placer County Fire Safe Alliance (PCFSA), an organization active in wildland fire safety. The Alliance consists of representatives from the Forest Service, Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Land Management, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, Placer County Resource Conservation District, Placer County Office of Emergency Services and the Foresthill, Greater Auburn, Greater Lincoln and Placer-Sierra Fire Safe Councils. The County has contracted with Anchor Point Group, LLC, a fire behavior consultant firm, which will utilize several data collection methods for producing the update.
“The Community Wildfire Protection Plan process has a very robust public outreach program and has actively involved our communities, professional land management organizations, and Fire Safe Councils,” said Chairwoman Jennifer Montgomery, whose Fifth District encompasses most of Placer County’s forested areas. “The outcome will provide a strong fire safety plan for the county moving forward.”
Anchor Point Group has developed an online survey, specific to each Fire Safe Council area, for the public’s participation in the update process. The survey results will identify and gauge public knowledge about wildfire risks and hazards in the community. The survey will take less than 10 minutes to complete and can be accessed through the Placer County Office of Emergency Services website.
Public meetings will be scheduled over the next few months to further explain and solicit input to the CWPP update project. The exact dates, times and locations for these meetings will be announced soon.
