Behind the Scenes at the Department of Child Support Services
January 03, 2013
Outreach event will help inform the public about how child support really works.
ROCKLIN – Placer County’s Department of Child Support Services will throw open its inner doors on January 15, 2013 from 4 to 5 p.m. for an informational seminar inside its Rocklin office, 1000 Sunset Blvd., Suite 200.
A first of its kind with the department, this event is designed to allow those interested in child support - or perhaps just curious - an opportunity to ask staff members anything, whether they have cases with the department or not.
“There’s just so much bad information out there concerning child support,” said Kristen Mindus, a supervisor with the department and coordinator of the event. “We just want people to have an opportunity to find out the truth.”
Mindus said the idea behind allowing access to a section of the department’s offices not normally open to the public illustrates its openness and commitment to dispelling misconceptions about child support. She also hopes the event helps parents work with the department more effectively.
Child Support Services in Placer County currently services over 9,000 active child support cases. In the past fiscal year, the department collected over $20 million for families. This collection-to-cost ratio makes Placer County one of the best counties in the state for cost-effectiveness.
Child support services are available to any parent, guardian, or caretaker regardless of income. The department offers services such as establishing paternity, establishing and enforcing child and medical support orders, accounting, and locating other parents.
“Some people think our department just pits one parent against another, or we only care about one parent over the other,” Mindus said. “If they know how we really work, they might be more inclined to partner with us going forward.”
