How do I get a Library Card?

We're glad you asked! To obtain a library card, please visit any one of the 12 Placer County Library branches and fill out a library card application. For all the details on obtaining library cards, see Get a Library Card.

I lost my library card

If your library card is lost or stolen, report it to the library immediately. Contact us.

What is my PIN?

If you obtained your card prior to October 1, 2008, your PIN (or personal identification number) is "changeme." If you obtained your card after October 1, 2008, your PIN is the last four digits of the telephone number on your library card application. We strongly recommend you change your PIN to make it more secure.

How do I change my PIN?

Open the Library Catalog

  1. Click on "My Account" located top right side of  page.
  2. Enter your library card number and current PIN.
  3. Under the Personal Information tab, locate  the 'Change PIN' drop down.
  4. Enter current PIN and your New PIN.
  5. Reenter New PIN to confirm it.
  6. Click the Update button.
  7. Log out of your library account and log back in to test your new PIN.

How do I reset my PIN (if I lost or forgot it)?

Open the Library Catalog and click on 'Log In' (top right of page)/ 

  1. Click the "Forgot My PIN" link.
  2. Enter library card number and click the Submit button.
  3. You will be sent an e-mail (assuming you have given the library your email address). The email contains a link that will take you to a page where you can enter a new PIN.
  4. If this fails, or if the library does not have your email address, please contact the Library for further instructions.

How do I renew my books or other library items?

Open the Library Catalog  and click on 'My Account' (top right of page) 

  1. Log into your account with your Library card number and PIN.
  2. Open the 'Checkouts' tab if it's not already open.
  3. Click one or more checkboxes to select the titles you want to renew or click Select All to renew all.
  4. Click the Renew button.
  5. Your renewals will be confirmed, or you will be told which items cannot be renewed.
  6. If an item fails to be renewed, it has either already been renewed twice or someone has a hold on it.
  7. Non-renewable items need to be returned to the Library as soon as possible. There is a $.25 charge per item per day
  8. You may also renew items in person and by telephone.

How do I place a hold or reserve on a book, DVD, or other library item?

Open the Library Catalog 

  1. Holds may be placed anytime after running a search in the catalog.
  2. After finding the item you want, click the Place Hold button near the item of your choice.
  3. Enter Library card number and PIN if prompted.
  4. Select the branch where you'd like to pick up your hold.
  5. You will be notified when your hold is available.
  6. Note: You may not be able to place a hold if an item is still in processing.
  7. HINT: If your first selection is checked out, look for other editions of the same title that may be available sooner. You may be able to find the same item with a different binding, or copyright date.
  8. Library staff can place holds for you as well, either by telephone, or in the library.

How do I reserve a computer?

Procedures for reservations and length of usage vary among our locations. Please contact your branch for more information: Branch Locations, Hours, Phone numbers

  • Placer County Library offers computer workstations with Internet access at each of its 12 locations
  • Computer usage is free.
  • Printouts are $.15 per page.
  • Computer users must have a Placer County Library card in good standing.
  • All users must read and sign the Computer Acceptable Use Policy

What forms of payment does the Library accept?

  • All Placer County Libraries accept cash or checks in person or via mail.
  • Credit or debit cards are accepted in person at Auburn, Granite Bay, and Rocklin Libraries only.
  • Credit or debit card payments are not accepted by phone or online.
  • Acceptable credit or debit cards: Visa, MasterCard, Discover, Diners Club, JCB. The library does not accept American Express.

How do I receive notifications by email?

When you fill out a change of address form and include an email, your account will be upgraded to email notification.

Does the Library have books for sale?

Yes. Book sales are held throughout the year by the Library's Friends of the Library groups. For times and dates, view the Friends of the Library Book Sale Schedule.

Does the library have tax forms?

For best results, please give us a call before you make a trip. Some branches stock the most commonly used tax booklets, forms, and instructions in limited supply and for as long as supplies last. Federal Tax forms, instructions, and publications are available online at www.irs.gov. California State tax forms and instructions are available online at www.ftb.ca.gov.
