Placer County Selects Mary George To Be Director Of Library Services
April 05, 2011
The Placer County Board of Supervisors confirmed the appointment of Mary L. George as county director of library services Tuesday.
George has been serving as acting director since the Dec. 30 retirement of Mark Parker, the director of library services for the last five years.
George was appointed to the Placer County Library’s top administrative post by County Executive Officer Thomas M. Miller. At Tuesday’s board meeting, board members voted unanimously to confirm the appointment.
“I am thrilled to have this opportunity,” George said. “The Placer County Library has been a big part of my life since I was a young girl growing up in Christian Valley. Riding my horse to visit the branch library in Applegate was one of my favorite pastimes. To me, being named director of library services now is a dream come true.”
“Mary will bring a combination of enthusiasm and experience to the job that would be hard to match,” CEO Miller said. “Mark did a good job steering the library through an era of tight budgets while overseeing the expansion of three branch libraries and the construction of a new branch in Rocklin. Mary has the right credentials to guide the library successfully through the next stage of its development.”
The Placer County Library operates 11 branches and a Bookmobile and oversees the Placer County Law Library. The library system has about 92 employees and an annual budget of approximately $5.6 million.
George has been assistant director of library services since 2001. Before that, she served as children’s services coordinator for the library system and as managing branch librarian at the Rocklin branch library.
She began her county service as a circulation clerk in 1992.
Her career also includes a stint as a reference librarian at Sierra College and experience as an adjunct professor at Sacramento City College teaching a course in library operations.
George earned bachelor’s degrees in political science and history from California State University, Chico in 1989 and a Master of Library and Information Science from the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of California, Berkeley in 1991.
