What’s New in the Museums?

December 16, 2011

Did you know that there are three museums in Auburn that are open year round? The holiday season is a great time to visit our museums since they are decorated for Christmas and there are many special seasonal objects on display. At the historic Courthouse we have a new exhibit featuring horse drawn wagons including a Doctor’s Buggy and a Child’s Wagon that have been loaned to us by the Native Sons of the Golden West, Parlor #59. These wagons and the accompanying photos remind us that only 100 years ago they were the primary method of transportation. Be sure to plan time to read the reproduced holiday greeting cards hanging on the Christmas tree in the foyer.

At the Bernhard Museum the dinner table is set with our best china and silver ready for the family to sit down for a Christmas feast. Friendly docents are waiting to take you on a guided tour of the house.

The Gold Country Museum is also spruced up for the season. Yes, gold miners celebrated Christmas in 1849! You can learn exactly how from the journals and letters on display. A new monitor exhibit has also just been completed.

The Placer County Museum in the historic Courthouse will be open from 5:00 - 8:00 pm on 17th for Old Town Country Christmas. We will have a crafts table for children to make a Santa wish list ornament along with cookies and apple cider for everyone.

We look forward to seeing you in a museum this holiday season.

The Placer County Museum is located in the historic Courthouse, 101 Maple St. and is open every day, except holidays, from 10:00 – 4:00.

The Bernhard Museum Complex at 291 Auburn-Folsom Rd. and the Gold Country Museum at 1273 High St., in the Gold Country Fairgrounds are open Tuesday–Sunday, except holidays, 11:00 – 4:00.
